It may feel like the summer has only just begun but all too soon, kids (and teachers!) will be back to school, college and university. Why not soften the blow of getting back to reality with one of these delightful gifts?
The ‘save-me-from-reality’ mug
Reality brings several fresh hits every day from the dreaded morning alarm clock to work and deadlines piling up. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed and so a personalised mug, complete with a motivational quote or a personal saying, along with their name, is a great idea.
There are some personalisation specialists on the high street or if not, order online. You can opt to have it delivered as a gift too, perfect for raising a smile over their morning coffee.
Wet weather gear
With the academic school year in the UK starting in late August/early September, all too soon we find ourselves running for cover from the deluge that are the autumnal rains. Busy with lectures or the whirl of school, no student wants to walk around with a large brolly ‘just in case it rains’. Thus our compact umbrellas are the ideal gift. Just pop in the bottom of your bag or rucksack and never be caught out by the weather again.
Personalised pillowcase or cushion cover
Whether the student is going to university for the first time or an experienced student, there is no compensation for being reminded of the love from home. Do this with a personalised pillowcase or cushion cover that they will love!
For any child returning to school or starting new, it is a daunting place and receiving a pretty gift is the ideal way to help soothe some of their fractious nerves. From personalised pencil cases to their own set of colouring pencils, sending them to school with their own stationery is a great way to start the term.
The magic of unicorns
It seems that no matter how you or old you may feel, unicorns are the kitsch item that everyone seems to love. From high street stores to online retailers, there is bound to be something super-cool in the unicorn. Frankly, the office wouldn’t run as smoothly without the unicorn tape dispenser…
Guitar lunch box
Sometimes, the most difficult times at school, uni and work can be the social times, especially at lunchtime. This guitar-shaped lunchbox makes an ideal talking point, as well as being perfect for keeping your lunch in tip-top condition.
Relax with colouring
The return to reality brings many pros and cons. Some of us love the routine and structure it gives our day but the stress of being back at work or back in the classroom can start to build. September to Christmas is a long-term and so learning to relax and de-stress is something we should all be doing. As well as plenty of exercise, an adult colouring book is inexpensive but for the college student, great for having something to decorate their halls of residence room with too.
The university survival kit
For many people, young and old, when September rolls around they will be taking their first big step away from everything they have known to plunge into the world of higher education. There will be challenges and opportunities galore so why not create a survival kit especially for them? Include a small sewing kit, a box of plasters, a notebook, several different styles of pens, as well as some sweet treats and anything else you can think. A few painkillers for the thumping head after an evening in the students union might be welcome too…
A good luck charm
Clearly, you need to follow the school uniform rulebook but a discreet necklace or bangle with a small good luck charm for the first day of high school could help the nervous primary school child fledge into a confident high school student.
When they get home from school, they will want to store their coats, bags and books somewhere and rather than them piling up in the hall, why not get each child a school box? A rattan basket would do, for example, and on certain days of the week, when they place their stuff inside, there could be a lovely surprise waiting for them.
Personalised water bottle
There are two reasons why this makes a great gift;
- The majority of us don’t drink enough water during the day and so by taking water to school or into lectures, students are making sure their brain stays well lubricated and alert.
- Single-use plastic bottles are frowned upon and with good reason so a refillable water bottle is an essential piece of kit.
The foldable tote bag
Just like plastic bottles are on the way out, so too are plastic bags thus, the foldable tote bag is perfect for lounging at the bottom of the school or university bag for when there are unexpected items to carry home. And like most things on this list, there are online retailers who can personalise the bags too.
First day at school/college/university picture frame
This is a great DIY project. Buy a box frame for photos (any size you desire) complete with an internal photo border. Take yourself off to a craft shop or look online for wooden block letters and spell out ‘my first day at school etc.’. On the morning they go to school, take a photo, print it off and put it in the frame. Don’t forget to add the date too. A beautiful keepsake.
IOU – a day out!
Sometimes, the blues of being back in the thick of it don’t materialise until later in the term so why not include an IOU for afternoon tea/day out at the zoo, a trip to the swimming pool etc. in a good luck card? Put a use by date on the IOU – why not make it before the term ends at Christmas? – and when the gloom of winter descends, they have something lovely to look forward to.
